Under federal bankruptcy laws, which supersede most state laws, individuals do have the right to file bankruptcy on their own, without the help of an attorney. Yet, this is not advisable and the U.S. Courts themselves state that it is extremely difficult for a layperson to file bankruptcy without help from an attorney. There are low cost attorneys available who can provide assistance. In addition, individuals who do wish to use an attorney can often make payment arrangements with an attorney to pay for their services. Otherwise, there is also help available online through nonprofit and for profit organizations. It is essential to know who you are working with prior to doing so, though. Research the firm prior to investing time or money into them.
