I’d like to avoid bankruptcy but just don’t know what to do. Can you suggest some group I might contact for help?

I’m greatly overwhelmed by my debts now that I’ve been unemployed for over six months. I’d like to avoid bankruptcy but just don’t know what to do. Can you suggest some group I might contact for help?

Deciding whether or not you need to file for bankruptcy is always a very difficult decision. You might actually want to meet with a bankruptcy attorney to see if you really can find a better option. Be sure to take an accurate list of all your debts and assets to this meeting. You might also want to call around and see if your county or city can recommend a reputable debt management group. This type of group can sometimes get your creditors to agree to smaller monthly payments over a longer period of time. Your creditors would      rather see you pay off the principal over a longer time period than lose the money altogether should you feel pressured to file for bankruptcy.
