How will bankruptcy effect (affect) my current job?

I recently filed for bankruptcy and fear notifying my current employer.  How will bankruptcy affect my current job?

Answers

No, bankruptcy will generally not impact an individual's current employment.  Employers lack just cause to examine a current employee's credit report.  Federal law prohibits employers from terminating employees or discriminating against them on the basis that they have filed for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy.  Typically, an employer is not required to be informed of an employee's bankruptcy filing unless he or she is doing so to avoid complying with a wage garnishment order.  Filing for bankruptcy might have an effect on a prospective job due to the fact that government, gaming and financial employers routinely perform background checks.  The rationale is that creditworthiness is a reflection of reliability, and employers may view the way that a prospective employee takes care of his or her personal affairs as an indication of how he or she will manage the company's assets.  They, in essence, seek to ensure that the applicant is not a liability or a high-risk investment.
