A Chapter 7 bankruptcy may stay on your credit report for 10 years from the date of discharge, but 20 years as a public record. However, there are ways to dispute it and have it removed. Individuals who have filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 13 will have a clear record after 7 years If the bankruptcy remains on the credit report, you should contact the credit reporting agencies- Experian, TransUnion, and/or Equifax that still have the bankruptcy listed. While they are under no duty to remove the record of the bankruptcy on their own, you may send them a letter that would legally require them to take remedial measures. You should send them a copy of your accounts from the bankruptcy petition, the notification of discharge, your social security card and driver's license, as well as a document verifying your address such as a utility bill. Within 30 days, the credit bureaus will make the remove the bankruptcy from the report.
